DoorDash, which dominates online food ordering and delivery services in the United States, is starting to expand into Japan.
TechnoBusiness JP (English Edition) – DoorDash, Inc. (NYSE: DASH), the largest online food ordering and delivery platform in the US, is expanding into the Japanese market.

DoorDash’s expansion to Japan started from Sendai which also marked the first market expansion in Asia and third in the world after previously expanding to Australia and Canada.
DoorDash co-founder and CEO Tony Xu said his company was interested in tapping into the Japanese market because its restaurant-heavy local economy presents a unique opportunity.
“We are excited to bring DoorDash to Japan. Our strategy has always been to empower the local economy, especially in suburban markets which have historically been underserved but have a high sense of connectivity between merchants and customers,” Xu said.
DoorDash hopes that its presence in Sendai, the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture with a population of 1 million people, can stimulate the local economy by connecting merchants and consumers.

Because, now traders in the city such as Bistro Bonten, Ducca Sendai, Steak Miya, Gyu-Kaku, Kappa Sushi, Gusto, Musashi, and Marugame Seimen can sell their wares through the DoorDash application.
Mutsuhiko Nagasawa, CEO of Carina Food Service, managing Ducca Sendai, said he was delighted to be the first merchant in Japan to be able to join the DoorDash community.
“We will continue to strive to bring delicious food to as many people as possible with DoorDash,” he said commenting on DoorDash’s presence.
To note, since its presence to the market in January 2013, San Francisco, California-based DoorDash has grown to become the leading online food ordering and delivery platform in the US.

Currently, the company that houses Caviar, Chowbotic, and Scotty Labs employs nearly 4,000 people. Throughout 2020, DoorDash managed to reap revenues of US$2.8 billion.
